Experience shows, however, that because of their disadvantaged positions, institutions in the South are largely unable to contribute on an equivalent footing with their Northern partners; the former typically have limited technical expertise to contribute to the project development process and are therefore unable to negotiate fair and equitable terms with Northern partners. In many North-South partnerships, Southern partners are incorporated into the projects after the scope and design of the project are set, and they come in mostly to facilitate the implementation of field activities. The problem is most acute in sub- Saharan Africa since the region has even weaker professional and institutional research capacities relative to Asia and Latin America. The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) based in Nairobi, Kenya, in collaboration with the University of Southampton are organizing a workshop on research proposal development. The main objective of the workshop is to strengthen the capacity of African scholars and institutions in developing good fundable proposals for scientific research. The specific objectives of the workshop are: to train African scholars in proposal development for social science research in the field of health or population; to inform scholars of the existing research programmes of the major funding organizations and to describe the proposal review processes of these organizations; to create opportunity for discussion between researchers from the region, representatives of donor agencies, and facilitators; to enable scholars to develop their concept proposals during the workshop and to obtain feedback from donor representatives and facilitators. The workshops will have four main components: A training session with facilitators who will go through the proposal development process. A donor-researcher forum. A one-on-one session between researchers from the region, representatives of donor agencies, and facilitators to discuss specific areas of interest or concern. The development of proposals for scientific research in the population and health fields.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2004-09-30T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2004-09-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":20000,"Financial Year":"2003/04","Lead Applicant":"Prof Alex Chika Ezeh","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Symposium"}],"Applicant Surname":"Ezeh","Approval Committee":"Health Consequences of Population Change","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":20000},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-078530_Z_05_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-078530_Z_05_Z","title":"Urbanization, Poverty and Health Dynamics in Sub-Saharan Africa. The high rates of urbanization, which are principally fuelled by rural-urban migration, amidst stagnating economies and poor governance, have created massive and abject poverty in over-crowded slum settlements in Africa's major cities. The magnitude of health inequities between the urban poor and other groups has been documented but the dynamic inter-linkages between migration, urban poverty and health are poorly understood because of lack of appropriate data. This programme builds on ongoing demographic and health research covering nearly 60,000 people in two slums in Nairobi City. This rich longitudinal data allows a holistic examination of the urban poverty-health link over time and across the life course. Descriptive and multivariate statistical methods will be used to assess linkages the between migration, poverty, and other factors on key health outcomes at each stage of the life course and will establish the extent to which ill-health deepens poverty. The main outputs will be scientific publications and dissemination of policy-relevant findings to policymakers. The programme will contribute to strengthening professional and institutional research capacity in Africa.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2010-12-31T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2006-01-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":2239443,"Financial Year":"2005/06","Lead Applicant":"Dr Eliya Zulu","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Programme Grant"}],"Applicant Surname":"Zulu","Approval Committee":"Populations and Public Health Funding Committee","Other Applicant(s)":"Dr Zewdu Woubalem, Prof Nyovani Janet Madise, Dr Jean-Christophe Fotso, Prof Jane Falkingham, Prof John Cleland, Prof Alex Chika Ezeh","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"Yes","Total amount including partnership funding":2239443},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-082775_Z_07_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-082775_Z_07_Z","title":"Assessing the linkages between socioeconomic status, perceived personal risk, and risk factors for cardiovascular and related non-communicable diseases in a population of slum dwellers in Nairobi, Kenya. With rapid urbanisation and poor economic performance new challenges emerge for NCD prevention in the region. This project aims to contribute to knowledge on the epidemiology of NCD in SSA by exploring the linkages between factors in the socioeconomic and socio-cultural environments, perceived risk for getting cardiovascular disease (CVD) and health-related behaviour among slum dwellers. Specifically it aims to estimate the levels and determinants of perceived risk for CVD, prevalence of risk factors for CVD and to describe the relationship between perceived risk and health related behaviour. Understanding these context-specific factors informs the design of prevention programs. Quantitative and qualitative methods will be employed. A random sample of 3746 adults in the Nairobi Urban Health and Demographic Surveillance System (NUHDSS) area will be interviewed together with focus group discussions. To complement existing data on socioeconomic and demographic characteristics from the NUHDSS we will collect data on; perceived risk for getting CVD by asking individuals to say what they feel their risk is; perceptions of ideal body size as an indicator of status and beauty, smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and physical activity, and biomarkers of CVD physiological risk factors","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2010-12-31T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2008-01-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":307949,"Financial Year":"2006/07","Lead Applicant":"Dr Catherine Kyobutungi","grantProgramme":[{"title":"International Training Fellowship"}],"Applicant Surname":"Kyobutungi","Approval Committee":"International Interview Committee","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"Yes","Total amount including partnership funding":307949},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-084284_Z_07_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-084284_Z_07_Z","title":"Request for financial support of the Fifth African Population Conference to beheld in Tanzania from 10-14 December 2007. This rapid population growth is happening in a context of high levels of poverty, poor education, low economic growth, environmental degradation, and food insecurity. Yet, empirical knowledge of the potential role of population dynamics in poverty eradication is very limited, especially in the context of the MDGs. Africa also exhibits relatively high child and maternal mortality rates. The almost universal decline in child mortality rates between the 1970s and early 1990s is being reversed in countries with weak health systems and those that have been worst affected by HIV and AIDS. Endemic diseases such as malaria and re-emergence of tuberculosis have compounded the challenges of halting the spread of HIV and mitigating the impact of AIDS. Still, the continent continues to face new threats from non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, and diabetes. Declining economic opportunities in rural areas are driving many people to urban areas in search of better livelihoods. The resulting rapid urbanization, which is happening in a context of weak economic growth and poor planning, has resulted in a fast- growing urban population, the majority of which is living in slum settlements that lack basic amenities and exhibit poor health outcomes. The 5APC will discuss these and other population and development challenges facing the continent. The success of the conference should be judged not only by the quality of scientific papers or how many people attended, but even more importantly, by how much progress the continent will have made in addressing poverty, population, and health issues in the next decade as a result of presentations and networks forged at the conference.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2008-12-09T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2007-12-10T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":30000,"Financial Year":"2007/08","Lead Applicant":"Dr Eliya Zulu","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Symposium"}],"Applicant Surname":"Zulu","Approval Committee":"Populations and Public Health Funding Committee","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":30000},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-086329_Z_08_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-086329_Z_08_Z","title":"Stimulating public discourse on health inequities in Kenya's informal settlements: Using research to address urban health challenges ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2008-03-28T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"086329/Z/08/Z","description":"The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international, non-profit organization conducting research on population, health and education in sub-Saharan Africa. The WHO also recommends introducing appropriate complementary feeds at six months, with continued breastfeeding up to two years or beyond. Poor infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices are widely documented in developing countries including Kenya, where only one- third of children are exclusively breastfed for six months. The Kenyan government developed a strategy to promote optimal IYCF practices in 2007, actualised mainly through the baby-friendly hospital initiative (BFHI) in public health facilities. Urban informal settlements, where most urban residents in Kenya live, present unique challenges to actualising the strategy. The near absence of public facilities in these settlements means they are systematically excluded from such initiatives. Very poor IYCF practices and high levels of malnutrition ch aracterise these settings; for example only 2% of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed, while 40% of children 0-42 months are malnourished. Innovative strategies to reach residents of urban informal settlements are therefore needed. We propose to assess effectiveness of personalised home-based nutritional counselling on IYCF practices and nutritional status of Kenyan children living in urban informal settlements.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2015-02-28T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2012-03-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":444391.38,"Financial Year":"2011/12","Lead Applicant":"Dr Elizabeth Wambui Kimani-Murage","grantProgramme":[{"title":"International Training Fellowship"}],"Applicant Surname":"Kimani-Murage","Approval Committee":"International Interview Committee","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"Yes","Total amount including partnership funding":"444391.38"},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-100775_Z_12_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-100775_Z_12_Z","title":"Establishing innovative community engagement approaches in Baby Friendly Community Initiatives ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2012-11-28T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"100775/Z/12/Z","description":"Child nutrition in the first years of life is critical for child survival and wellbeing. Poor infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices are widely documented in Kenya, with potential detrimental effects on child health and growth. To address this, the Ministry of Health has implemented the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) developed by WHO and UNICEF to promote breastfeeding in maternity wards worldwide. However, since few women deliver in hospital in Kenya, the impact of this is questionable. Consideration has been given to shifting towards the Baby Friendly Community Initiative (BFCI), which uses the principles of BFHI, but is implemented at the community level. BFCI has been implemented successfully in some countries both in the developed and developing world. Effective implementation of the BFCI in Kenya will require a clear understanding of its value and how it would work best; and how to best involve communities. This study aims to establish innovative, public- informed approaches of community engagement in baby friendly community initiatives. This will involve participatory action research at the community level, and two and three-way dialogues amongst researchers, policy makers/program implementers and the general public including key community opinion leaders, mothers and fathers using innovative multimedia efforts. CARTA+ has identified three strategic thrusts based on the past achievements of CARTA. It will: 1) Maintain a pipeline of high-quality doctoral candidates and graduates to build a critical mass of multidisciplinary researchers across CARTA+ African partner-institutions. These fellows will be recruited from these institutions, and registered at African partner universities. 2) Institutionalise aspects of CARTA to strengthen and sustain PhD training, build research-supportive environments, and accelerate high-quality research activity (supervision, mentorship, faculty visits, improved administration) inAfrican institutions; and 3) Secure the future and foster the career paths of high-achieving CARTA graduates as productive researchers, grooming them as future research leaders in Africa, through post-doctoral positions, re-entry grants, an active alumni network, proposal development workshops, and mentorship and collaboration opportunities through pilot research projects. Together, these three strategies will produce a critical mass of researchers and research leaders who will create, promote and lead active research and training programmes at their universities. As change agents within their institutions, they create a feedback mechanism to guarantee sustainability of CARTA+ strategies (Figure 1). Background Since 2008, CARTA has established itself as a viable platform to build an African academy poised to lead world- class, multidisciplinary research to improve public and population health (Rand Europe, 2012, 2013, 2014 ). CARTA+ builds on CARTA's mutually- reinforcing two-pronged strategy to develop individual research capacity and leadership while concurrently transforming institutional research cultures and organisational systems within which these individuals operate. This approach creates the much-needed conducive environments to retain active researchers at African universities who, themselves, can support further capacity development for research and lead institutional change (Figure 1). How CARTA+ responds to regional health needs The Post-2015 Development Agenda emphasises the urgency of addressing the social determinants of health. The colliding burden of infectious and non-communicable diseases places poorly-functioning African health systems under enormous strain. To effectively address the major health, health systemsand development issues facing African countries and to produce robust evidence, a multidisciplinary approach to public and population health research is essential. CARTA's tested and successful multidisciplinary training model is a proven vehicle for responding to these needs and constitutes CARTA+'s strategic advantage. Higher education needs The aspirations of many African countries is to expand the numbers of PhD-level scientists and researchers. The African Union's Agenda 2063 underscores the need to \"elevate Africa's role in global research, technology development and transfer, innovation and knowledge production\". Yet the African higher education sector is characterised by a number of challenges including: low levels of funding, weak research culture and productivity, inadequate systems to support research, and a primary focus on undergraduate training. The CARTA+ approach of training university staff and supporting themto become productive researchers, research leaders and change agents in their universities, and to lead high-quality research and research training respondsto these challenges and positions the African higher education sector to meet these aspirations.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2021-02-28T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2016-03-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":520788.69,"Financial Year":"2014/15","Lead Applicant":"Prof Alex Chika Ezeh","grantProgramme":[{"title":"DELTAS Initiative"}],"Partnership Name":"DELTAs Africa","Applicant Surname":"Ezeh","Approval Committee":"DELTAs Africa Interview Committee","Other Applicant(s)":"Prof Fredros Oketch Okumu, Prof Anne Ruhweza Katahoire, Prof Frances E Griffiths, Prof Samson M Kinyanjui, Dr Kathleen Kahn, Prof Goran Bondjers, Prof Akinyinka Omigbodun, Dr Adamson Sinjani Muula, Prof Anne Nangulu, Dr Chimaraoke Izugbara","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"Yes","Total amount including partnership funding":"5237425.1"},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-200247_Z_15_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-200247_Z_15_Z","title":"Voices for Action: Food Security for Maasai Women and Children ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2015-10-28T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"200247/Z/15/Z","description":"Food and nutrition security exists “when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life.” In Kenya, millions of people are food insecure, particularly those living in arid and semi-arid regions. I aspire to be a global leader and advocate for human dignity and social justice, bridging the gap between the Bill of Rights stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (http://bit.ly/1O8f0nS) and the lived realities. I am particularly interested in food and nutrition security for underprivileged populations such as the urban poor. I want to empower the powerless to shape solutions to their problems through enhancing their voice and agency. I aspire to see impactful policies and programmes informed by the voices of the voiceless. The right to food is a most basic human right enshrined in global treaties (http://bit.ly/1O8f0nS, http://bit.ly/2fOGxy4) and in the Kenyan Constitution (http://bit.ly/1UcDwq7), considered one of the most progressive constitutions globally in the protection of human rights. Furthermore, achievement of food and nutrition security is a core aspiration in Kenya’s long-term development policy - Kenyan Vision 2030 (http://www.vision2030.go.ke/Kenya). While the global goal, in line with universal human rights, is to achieve zero hunger by 2030 as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (http://bit.ly/2pRBc1U), millions of people globally are hungry. SSA has the highest level of hunger, scoring the lowest in the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) in 2016 (http://bit.ly/2qBh4BJ). Kenya ranks among countries with serious food insecurity, with an estimated 10 million people - about a quarter of the population, being hungry. Some of the most pronounced food insecurity is in urban poor settings. My research in Kenya, which is corroborated by others, indicates that a majority (over 80%) of households in urban slums are food insecure (PMCID: 4242851). Food insecurity is considered a major barrier to optimal child nutrition (PMID: 25521041), with about half of children being undernourished (PMCID: 4476587). My objective for public engagement is to explore the nexus between the right to food as stipulated in the Bill of Rights in the Kenyan Constitution and the lived experiences among the urban poor, particularly children, as evidenced by research. The Kenyan Constitution, 2010 (http://bit.ly/1UcDwq7) states that “every person has the right to be free from hunger and to have adequate food of acceptable quality”, further emphasised for children. Understanding of such rights is complex for most people. What they are familiar with is their own daily struggle to afford the basic food basket. We will innovatively explore community understanding of, and empower them on, the concepts of food and nutrition security and the right to food. We aim to use the basic food basket to draw a link between the right to food enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution and the daily life struggle with food especially for children in urban slums. This will empower poor communities and reach policymakers about the need to mitigate food and nutrition insecurity in urban poor communities. Through public engagement, I hope to deepen the understanding of how those most affected can help to shape solutions to health problems through creative approaches, thereby demystifying research and Science, and health concepts.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2020-03-31T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2018-01-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":204061.74,"Financial Year":"2016/17","Lead Applicant":"Dr Elizabeth Wambui Kimani-Murage","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Public Engagement Fellowship"}],"Applicant Surname":"Kimani-Murage","Approval Committee":"Engagement Fellowship Interview Committee","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":"204061.74"},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-219200_Z_19_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-219200_Z_19_Z","title":"Evidence to action: Food and nutrition security through public engagement ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2019-09-12T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"219200/Z/19/Z","description":"Ending hunger by 2030 is a core Sustainable Development Goals target. In Kenya, slum residents experience high levels of food and nutrition insecurity, with over 80% of their households being food insecure, close to half of children under five years being stunted and about a third of mothers being underweight. Despite this, the right to food is recognized in the Kenyan constitution. Through a public engagement fellowship funded by the Wellcome Trust, we piloted a model, working with community organized groups (COGs) from 10 Nairobi slums, to engage their communities on food and nutrition security concept and research evidence thereof, using participatory methodologies. We will scale this model to other Kenyan slums. We aim to empower people on food and nutrition security concept and the research evidence thereof, and obtain their views to shape further research and interventions, hence eventually bridge the gap between the lived experiences, future research and food security. We will also build capacity of COGs in public engagement, for greater effectiveness, success and sustainability. It affects the social and environmental determinants of health including access to sufficient food, leading to undernutrition and mental health challenges, through direct pathways such as increased heat, more frequent droughts and floods; and indirect pathways associated with land use changes and impacts on agricultural productivity. Malnutrition is projected as the greatest contributor to climate change-related morbidity and mortality. However, health impacts of climate change among vulnerable populations in the East African drylands remain largely unexposed, especially through formal attribution, documentation of lived experiences and engagement of practice and policy actors. This project aims to highlight the health impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations in the East African drylands through research, public and policy engagement to catalyse climate policy and practice change. Specifically, we will analyse historical climate, ecological and nutritional status data to quantify climate impacts on nutritional status, conduct primary research to document communities’ lived experiences with climate change impacts on nutritional status and mental health, and model future scenarios and costs of the impacts. We will also engage policy and practice actors to catalyse appropriate climate action.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2027-02-11T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2024-02-12T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":2552499.09,"Financial Year":"2022/23","Lead Applicant":"Dr Elizabeth Wambui Kimani-Murage","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Climate Impacts Award"}],"Applicant Surname":"Kimani-Murage","Approval Committee":"Climate Impacts Advisory Committee","Other Applicant(s)":"Ms Rosinah Mbenya, Prof Rosemary Green, Prof Gilbert Ong'isa Ouma, Mrs Mieke Bourne, Dr Rupert Francis Stuart-Smith, Dr Stepha McMullin, Dr Patrick G Christian Ilboudo","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":"2552499.09"},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-228139_Z_23_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-228139_Z_23_Z","title":"Data Science Without Borders ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2023-09-30T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"228139/Z/23/Z","description":"Data Science Without Boarders (DSWB) project is envisaged as a proof of concept to demonstrate the power of co-designing strategies for application of advanced data science tool to improve data use and application/utilisation of machine learning or artificial intelligence- generated tools for patient management, prediction or routine care and other use cases as demonstrated in the partner mapping exercise. APPROACH: We propose to leverage on existing platforms, models and capacity strengthening programs to create a research support hub with three satellite stations to serve 1) West and Central Africa (bilingual French/English), 2) Southern Africa and 3) Eastern Africa. The research support hub will provide access to resources, mentorship, light training, and intense training with protected time to post PhD early and mid-career researchers in the three regions. The satellite centres will be complemented by the creation of an on-line course on grantsmanship that will be delivered regularly, the dissemination of key ideas through regular webinars, and the establishment of a pan-African community of practice for research fundraising. The satellite in West/Central Africa will strengthen bilingual facilitators’ capacities and generate resources in French that will support French-speaking researchers to write stronger proposals in English. IMPACT: A community of well networked pan- African researchers that have been capacitated to lead fundable proposals and that can support others to develop into researcher leaders.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2026-12-31T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2024-01-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":1226102.67,"Financial Year":"2022/23","Lead Applicant":"Dr Marta Vicente Crespo","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Discretionary Award"}],"Applicant Surname":"Vicente Crespo","Approval Committee":"Internal Decision Panel","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":"1226102.67"},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-228261_Z_23_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-228261_Z_23_Z","title":"The State of Data Science in Africa ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2023-09-30T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"228261/Z/23/Z","description":"The potential of data science to revolutionize healthcare in Africa is vast, but persistent challenges hinder its progress. This project seeks to establish a benchmark assessing the current state of data science in African healthcare. The initiative aims to explore emerging trends, opportunities, and facilitate knowledge exchange to stimulate innovative thinking within the field. To achieve the project’s primary objective, 15 teams have been formed to produce 15 writeups. We reached out to the writing teams to identify key needs (time, location, staff support) and incorporated them into the proposal. We propose two writing retreats, one in Nairobi and one in Cape Town, to give teams protected time for individual writing and consensus building, facilitated sessions and engagement. The workshops will be led by experts selected by APHRC and co-chairs. The primary output will be fifteen draft manuscripts on advancing healthcare through data science in Africa. This work will contribute to the progress of data science in African healthcare, fostering innovation, and paving the way for improved health outcomes across the continent.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2025-09-17T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2023-09-18T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":80830.06,"Financial Year":"2022/23","Lead Applicant":"Dr Catherine Kyobutungi","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Discretionary Award"}],"Applicant Surname":"Kyobutungi","Approval Committee":"Internal Decision Panel","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":"80830.06"},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-311682_Z_24_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-311682_Z_24_Z","title":"Catalysing climate change action research for maternal and perinatal health in West Africa: towards evidence-based policy and practice (The CHARTer Project in West Africa) ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2024-07-31T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"311682/Z/24/Z","description":"Our aim is to unveil the impacts of environmental heat exposures such as high ambient temperature, drought, rainfall/flooding on access to antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) services as well as on maternal, newborn and child mortality in Senegal and The Gambia through evidence generation, and public, community and policy engagements, in order to catalyse climate policy and practice change. FarajaMH is a model trained with mental health conversational chats, clinical notes, audio and textual screening data from Health Demographic and Surveillance Systems (HDSS), for screening DAP from sampled populations in Kenya and Tanzania. It will be evaluated and validated entirely within a controlled research environment, testing its screening accuracy, usability, and safety. The expected outcomes include (1) a harmonised multimodal data repository of mental health information mapped to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model (OMOP CDM); (2) a bilingual generative AI model for screening for DAP; (3) a mental-health data catalogue and visual analytics dashboard; and (4) publications and conference presentations on GenAI in mental health in East-African context.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2028-05-31T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2026-06-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":2986740,"Financial Year":"2025/26","Lead Applicant":"Dr Tatenda Duncan Kavu","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Generative AI for Anxiety, Depression and Psychosis"}],"Applicant Surname":"Kavu","Approval Committee":"Generative AI for Anxiety, Depression and Psychosis","Other Applicant(s)":"Rosemary Gathara, Dr Bylhah Mugotitsa, Prof James Todd, Dr Jay Greenfield, Mr Julian Guyana Onyango, Dr Silvia Bosibori Kemunto, Dr Agnes N.K Kiragga","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":2986740},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-344640_Z_26_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-344640_Z_26_Z","title":"Evidence of AI in Health (EVAH) Initiative - J-PAL and APHRC ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2025-12-31T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"344640/Z/26/Z","description":"Under the Real World Evidence Platform (RWEP), J-PAL will design and deliver a competitive funding process for randomized evaluations in low- and lower- middle income countries that: 1) examines whether clinical AI tools improve real-world health outcomes; 2) tests innovations that increase effective AI tool adoption, use, and integration into health systems; and 3) advances methodological innovations to ensure evaluations keep pace with AI development. J-PAL will manage the portfolio for project success. J-PAL will develop a rigorous, policy-relevant evaluation pipeline by cultivating research partnerships through matchmaking and project development, two evaluation incubator workshops, and a regional scholars program. J-PAL will enable RWEP evidence use nationally and regionally through partnerships integrating evidence into partners’ initiatives, scaling support, and evidence synthesis and dissemination. Within Africa, the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) will be a close partner for advancing RWEP’s goals. We describe expected areas for collaboration below, and activities that APHRC will lead independently including i) developing an atlas of AI tools in Africa, ii) conducting regulatory scoping to document policies and frameworks on AI governance, adoption and evaluation, iii) additional evaluation capacity building for African researchers, and iv) evidence dissemination at institutional and continental levels.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2029-01-12T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2026-01-13T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":1639924.98,"Financial Year":"2025/26","Lead Applicant":"Dr Agnes N.K Kiragga","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Discretionary Award"}],"Applicant Surname":"Kiragga","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":"1639924.98"},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-347771_Z_26_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-347771_Z_26_Z","title":"Piloting Federated Learning to Re-design Health Data Systems in Africa ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2026-06-02T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"347771/Z/26/Z","description":"African health systems generate rich data through HDSS longitudinal cohorts, and real-world data from electronic health records in hospitals, yet this potential remains untapped. Data remains fragmented across institutions and borders, regulatory frameworks differ, and centralised pooling increases violation of national data protection laws and institutional trust. This project pilots federated learning across four sites in Cameroon, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso using DataSHIELD, which sends analytical code to the data rather than moving data itself. Each institution retains control of its data within national jurisdiction, contributing only non-disclosive summary outputs. Building on the existing continental data initiatives that are creating localized solutions such as a TRE-in-a-box by the APCC, or centralized data pooling by INSPIRE Network, and training in DataSHIELD by the DSWB team, this advances to live, governed, multi-country federated analysis with use cases from 2 HDSS sites and 2 hospitals a first in any African health context. We aim to conduct analyses on population health indicators and non- communicable diseases, evaluate technical and operational feasibility, governance performance, produce open-access protocols, training materials, templates to support broader adoption of privacy-preserving analytics across Africa. Findings : Inform the future of health data systems in Africa and allow cross-border evidence generation.","plannedDates":[{"endDate":"2027-07-01T00:00:00+00:00","startDate":"2026-07-01T00:00:00+00:00"}],"amountAwarded":200000,"Financial Year":"2025/26","Lead Applicant":"Dr Agnes N.K Kiragga","grantProgramme":[{"title":"Discretionary Award"}],"Applicant Surname":"Kiragga","Approval Committee":"Discretionary Award decision meeting","Other Applicant(s)":"Prof Bertrand Hugo Mbatchou Ngahane, Dr Bruno LANKOANDE, Dr Steve Bicko Cygu, Dr Siaka Koné","fundingOrganization":[{"id":"GB-CHC-210183","name":"The Wellcome Trust"}],"recipientOrganization":[{"id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre","name":"African Population and Health Research Centre","addressCountry":"Kenya","addressLocality":"Nairobi"}],"Has the grant transferred?":"No","Research conducted at multiple locations?":"No","Total amount including partnership funding":200000},"data_license":{"url":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"},"publisher":{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"},"recipients":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre/","org_id":"360G-Wellcome-ORG:African-Population-and-Health-Research-Centre"}],"funders":[{"self":"https://api.threesixtygiving.org/api/v1/org/GB-CHC-210183/","org_id":"GB-CHC-210183"}],"additional_data_metadata":{"source_license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","sources_metadata":{"codeListLookup":{"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"},"locationLookup":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrgInfos":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"},"recipientOrganizationLocation":{"license":"https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/doc/open-government-licence/version/3/"}},"source_license_name":"Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)"}},{"grant_id":"360G-Wellcome-352812_Z_26_Z","data":{"id":"360G-Wellcome-352812_Z_26_Z","title":"Eastern Africa Climate and Health Science and Policy Consortium ","Region":"International","currency":"GBP","awardDate":"2026-05-28T00:00:00+00:00","Internal ID":"352812/Z/26/Z","description":"African Population and Health Research Center and its partners: Addis Ababa University, IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre, CIFOR-ICRAF, and the Population, Health and Environment Ethiopia propose to establish the Eastern Africa Climate and Health Science Policy Consortium.
